Artificial sphincters

Under normal circumstances, urinary sphincter of men remains contracted until and unless they
opt to open/relax it for urination. Whenever you relax the sphincter, urine leaves from the
bladder and flows from the urethra i.e. the tube carrying urine from the urinary bladder and out
from the body.

However, a few individuals after radiation therapy or prostate therapy treatment fail to control
the sphincter, which causes urine leakage or urine inconsistence. In this situation, our urologists
place AUS i.e. Artificial Urinary Sphincter i.e. a device that acts similar to your natural
sphincter.

Artificial Sphincters

Based on the components, our artificially placed sphincter i.e. Artificial Urinary Sphincter may
help you to resolve your urine inconsistence issues.

  • Urethral Cuff wraps across the urethra to control the urine flow. Whenever the cuff
remains closed i.e. remains filled with fluid, it prevents passage of urine, while when it
    expands, urine passes easily.

  • Pump moves the fluid away or within from the AUS’ urethral cuff and it remains present
    in the scrotum.
  • Similar to the cuff, balloon also holds the fluid and from this, fluid moves whenever
urethral cuff expands and it remains beneath the belly i.e. abdominal muscles.

For urinating with AUS, one has to squeeze the pump in the scrotum. On doing this, pump
moves the fluid from the cuff within the balloon and thereby, allows expansion of the cuff and
opening of the urethra. Urethra remains open for about 3minutes to allow you urinate and after
that, cuff closes automatically.
